Nueva Vizcaya implements energy conservation measures

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (PIA) — The provincial government of Nueva Vizcaya is advancing its Government Energy Management Program (GEMP) to reduce its P43 million annual electricity consumption and lower carbon emissions in support of the national government’s climate change mitigation initiative.

Engineer Edgardo Sabado, provincial planning and development officer, said the program includes the proposed implementation of two major projects, the P7 million Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC) project and the P32.8 million Improvement of the Provincial Capitol Grounds (IPCG) project.

Sabado said the EEC project involves installing 93 inverter-type air conditioning units in PLGU offices, hospitals, and facilities, and submeters in PLGU buildings within the provincial capitol.

He added that plans are underway to convert the lighting facilities of provincial buildings into solar-powered systems.

Meanwhile, the IPCG project aims to rehabilitate and enhance the provincial capitol grounds, including the water fountain, open plaza, bike lanes, parking spaces, and sidewalks.

Sabado said the IPCG’s intended benefits include providing an eco-friendly environment, creating a multi-purpose recreational space, improving public health and safety, optimizing parking, and increasing awareness about urban greening and civic pride.

“With these projects, we aim to reduce our electricity consumption and carbon emissions significantly. The savings generated will be redirected to other priority programs and services for Novo Vizcayanos,” he said.

Sabado also expressed optimism that the PLGU can meet the 10% energy reduction benchmark set by the Department of Energy under its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program for local government units.

He said the GEMP is expected to be implemented over two years once approved. (ALM/BME/PIA Nueva Vizcaya)
