Nueva Vizcaya mulls state of calamity declaration due to dengue cases surge

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (PIA) – Health officials are pushing for the declaration of a state of calamity in Nueva Vizcaya due to the surge in dengue cases.

Dr. Anthony Cortez, provincial health officer, emphasized the need for this declaration to enable the provincial government to fully utilize its resources for dengue prevention and control.

He said the province has recorded 2,609 dengue cases and seven deaths from January to August 24, 2024.

The Provincial Integrated Health Office’s report indicates that all 15 municipalities in the province have been affected by dengue.

“With this situation, we currently have the highest number of dengue cases among provinces in Cagayan Valley. I urge our fellow Novo Vizcayanos to actively participate in dengue prevention efforts, particularly through maintaining cleanliness,” Cortez said.

Governor Jose Gambito announced that a special meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council is scheduled for later this month to formally request the state of calamity declaration, which would facilitate urgent action by the provincial board.

“In addition, we will also request the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to extend the state of calamity declaration due to the ongoing adverse effects of African Swine Fever, which continues to cause significant losses in our local hog industry,” Gambito added. (OTB/BME/PIA NVizcaya)
