BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (PIA) – The provincial government of Nueva Vizcaya has completed the construction of a temporary shelter for abused women and children in the province.
Recently inaugurated as the Nueva Vizcaya Halfway Home for Women and Children, the P1 million facility was refurbished from being the Nueva Vizcaya Teachers Retirees Association building.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Flordelina Granada said the provincial government established the shelter to address the need for a temporary shelter for women and children who have been victims of abuse and violence.
She said the shelter will provide protection, support, and treatment to abused women and children in the province particularly those who are victims of domestic violence, trafficking, sexual assault, and harassment.
“While this facility can become a temporary shelter for our stakeholders, we can refer them further to our Regional Haven for longer stay and reintegration to their families, provided the offender is not present,” Granada said.
She said free legal services will also be availed through the haven for women and children.
According to Granada, cases of Violence Against Women and Children in the province for the past years have been high but it decreased in 2024.
She partly attributed the high VAWC cases to the increased awareness among women about their rights, leading them to stand up and file cases and complaints to pthe roper authorities. (OTB/BME/PIA NVizcaya)
