Nurses reminded: Remain compassionate in the age of AI

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — As healthcare increasingly embraces artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovations, the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) La Union Chapter is urging nurses to adapt while keeping human compassion at the core of their profession.

At the sixth PNA Regional Convention on April 26, PNA La Union president Kristel Gizelle Almojuela-Beñas emphasized that while technology can transform healthcare, it can never replace a nurse’s healing touch.

“While artificial intelligence and technology offer groundbreaking solutions in healthcare, nothing can replace the genuine care provided by a nurse’s hands and heart,” Beñas said.

Held under the theme “Nursing in the Next Decade: Leading Change and Advancing Health,” the convention gathered over 175 nurses and nursing students from across the Ilocos Region to tackle one of the profession’s biggest challenges: staying future-ready without losing humanity.

Beñas pointed out that with Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Gen Z nurses working together, adapting to new technologies comes with varying levels of ease and resistance.

“We may find it challenging now because we have Baby Boomers, Gen Z, and Millennials. With the rise of technology, some generations are struggling. However, they actually learn to adopt, even though some initially resist change. That is the beauty of our teamwork,” she said.

She stressed the need to balance technological advancements with the core values that define nursing.

“Even with the presence of technology, we must harmonize it with our care as nurses so that everything we do maintains a humane touch,” Beñas explained.

While AI can assist in healthcare, she said it cannot sense fear or offer genuine comfort — roles that only compassionate nurses can fulfill.

Plenary sessions during the convention explored the increasing use of digital tools in healthcare, along with discussions on research ethics, community health promotion strategies, and entrepreneurship opportunities for nurses.

These conversations reflected the evolving demands of the profession, where technical skills are crucial but emotional intelligence remains irreplaceable.

Young and future nurses were also encouraged to intentionally nurture compassion, as it will continue to set them apart in an increasingly automated healthcare system.

Beyond learning new skills, the convention served as a rallying call for nurses to lead healthcare innovation without losing sight of the people they serve. (CCMT/KJCR, PIA La Union)
