On World Environmental Health Day: CCC highlights link between environmental and public health

MANILA — In celebration of World Environmental Health Day, the Climate Change Commission (CCC) underscored the direct relationship between environmental health and public well-being. The quality of air, water, food, and living conditions influences human health outcomes.

Environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change have immediate and long-term effects. Polluted air worsens respiratory illnesses; contaminated water causes disease outbreaks; and the degradation of natural ecosystems increases vulnerability to floods and droughts. Protecting the environment goes beyond conservation—it is important to ensure the health and safety of both present and future generations.

Ecological degradation also places an economic burden on healthcare systems and communities. The rise in environment-related diseases, such as asthma and waterborne illnesses, results in higher healthcare costs and loss of productivity. Therefore, prioritizing environmental health translates into significant public health and economic benefits, contributing to overall societal well-being.

“Let us all take this opportunity to reflect on how we can actively participate in protecting our environment to safeguard our health and that of generations to come,” said CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje.

Simple actions such as reducing waste, conserving water, and planting trees contribute to a healthier environment. World Environmental Health Day serves as a reminder that addressing environmental issues is crucial to protect public health.

The CCC is committed to strengthen policies that promote environmental health, aligning these efforts with the country’s sustainable development goals and global climate action initiatives.

Presidential Proclamation No. 595, s. 2018 officially declared September 26 as World Environmental Health Day to raise public awareness of the critical link  between environmental quality and human health. It also encourages initiatives that promote accountability in maintaining both environmental integrity and public health.
