Oriental Mindoro gov’t prioritizes long-term solutions to flooding

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The provincial government of Oriental Mindoro is taking major steps to address the flooding problem in the province.

“The plan of the provincial government of Oriental Mindoro is river restoration and dredging of our rivers…in cooperation with national agencies, including the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and other agencies that need to provide permits for these activities,”  Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Staff Ram Joseph Temeña said.

Temeña added that this has been an ongoing initiative and has already begun in the towns of Bansud and Gloria. It is planned to extend to other rivers in other towns here in Oriental Mindoro.

Due to continuous rainfall caused by the shearline and northeast monsoon, various towns in Oriental Mindoro have been inundated with floods in recent days. The flooding was caused by overflowing rivers in several towns, some of which, are silted.

Along with these efforts, local government coordination with disaster response teams continues to provide immediate assistance to affected residents. Evacuation centers remain as temporary shelters for more than 500 families displaced by the floods.

As of noon on January 13, some areas in Calapan City, Baco, Victoria, Socorro, and Pola remained submerged, and the local government has assisted evacuees.

Despite the challenges, the government and the people remain hopeful that with long-term solutions and strengthened preparedness, resilience against disasters such as flooding will be enhanced. (AS/PIA MIMAROPA-Oriental Mindoro/Photos from CDRRMD Calapan City)
