CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — Various sectors in Oriental Mindoro participated in the synchronized effort to promote life-saving skills.
The event held on July 17 and dubbed “Zappinas 2024: Pamayanang Handa, Pamayanang Ligtas” aims to enhance the readiness of communities in medical emergencies through the “hands-only” Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
It was organized by the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro in collaboration with the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Provincial Department of Health Oriental Mindoro (PDOHO).
Proclamation No. 511 from Malacañan Palace designated July 17 as the nationwide hands-only CPR day, reinforcing the significance of basic life support techniques in mitigating critical situations.
Loriel Dela Peña, PHO Oriental Mindoro Officer-in-Charge of Public Health Sector Services, highlighted the campaign’s primary objective which is to empower households with fundamental CPR knowledge.
“Our aim is for at least two individuals in every household to be equipped with the skills needed to respond effectively to emergencies, particularly during instances of cardiac arrest,” said Dela Peña during an interview with PIA Oriental Mindoro.
Dela Peña outlined the steps: “First, Check the scene for safety, then Call for assistance. Cover the person’s mouth to prevent infection risks, Compress the chest to circulate blood, and Connect early with emergency services,” emphasizing the “5Cs” as a guideline for CPR responders.
Supporting organizations such as the Philippine Heart Association Oriental Mindoro Chapter, Oriental Mindoro Medical Society (OMMS), and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) were integral to the success of the event, providing expertise and resources to further educate participants on CPR techniques and their critical importance in saving lives.
