CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro has recently inaugurated a state-of-the art African Swine Fever (ASF) testing laboratory.
The P3.6 million laboratory, which comes with ASFV cPCR test kits and is expected to enhance the province’s capacity for early detection and efficient management of ASF.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Jan. 18, was attended by government officials headed by Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Bonz Dolor and Provincial Veterinarian Grimaldo Catapang.
The facility, strategically located in the Provincial Capitol Complex is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding the swine industry against the devastating impacts of ASF.
The newly-inaugurated laboratory is equipped with advanced testing equipment, allowing it to process up to 90 specimens a day.
This increased testing capacity is a significant step from the previous method of the province with the specimens still being brought to the City of Manila for testing. This ensures a more rapid and comprehensive response to potential outbreaks.
Dolor, in his inaugural speech, emphasized the importance of the laboratory in fortifying the province’s defenses against ASF. He stated, “The establishment of this laboratory is a testament to our commitment to protect our swine industry and the livelihoods of our local farmers. With this state-of-the-art facility, we are better equipped to detect and manage African Swine Fever at an early stage, thereby minimizing its impact on our agricultural sector.”
In the meantime, the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro is hastening the process for the accreditation and authorization of the testing facility in order for it to be fully operational.
The facility is also expected to strengthen the province’s position in maintaining ASF-free zones, supporting the local economy, and ensuring food security for its residents. (JJGS/ PIA MIMAROPA – Oriental Mindoro)
