Ornamental plants to help beautify Matanao tourism site

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur (PIA) –An officer of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Davao del Sur planted ornamental plants in Sitio Talambato, Brgy. Asbang, Matanao, Davao del Sur to show to foreign and domestic tourists the beautiful view of the land.

Engr. Dulcesima Padillo, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer in Davao del Sur said they planted ornamental plants in Barangay Asbang, Matanao  since it is located in the Tourism Office which caters to domestic and foreign tourists.

“Ornamental plants were planted at the back of the Tourism Office so that people who stand by there will see the flowers, and will enjoy nature.  Aside from that, we have to prevent soil erosion which  is prevalent in the area,” she said.

Based on experience in planting Pink Cabeboughya, Padillo said these will eventually show colors from four to five years.

She said fifty workers were hired as job-order workers and they finished the planting of red Cabeboughya.

Padillo assured that it will not be a wasted time in going to Brgy. Asbang because of the presence of government workers who will see to that the plants grow or be replaced by another plant.

“We would not observe tree planting but tree growing and nurturing,” Padillo said.

She said the source of water in watering the plants is the water tank located just near the building.

Padillo said every now and then it rains in the area unlike in thee areas in the city which does not rain.

“We rely much on our job-order workers in the area that they will take care the planted seedlings.

Padillo said the rate of survival of the red cabebhoughya is 100 percent, if one seedling does not survive, we will eventually replace them.,

We have a reserve in case the plant will not grow.

She said as PENRO, they established partnership with the Provincial Tourism Office and the municipal tourism office of Matanao.

“In particular the tree growing activities, we also planted bamboo in the area given that there is a processing plant in Barangay Murcia owned by the Davao del Sur State College,” she said.

Padillo said the logging concession in the area a long time ago, really caused so much devastation in the area, followed by kaingin which tapped the richness of the land.  She noticed that once dominated by cogonal plants, other plants are slow to grow.

Clover Jane Sabornido, municipal information and tourism officer of Matanao said the tree growing activity in Brgy Asbang means the beautification of the area in the future.

She hopes that more partners would respond in order to expedite the beautification of Brgy Asbang.

Sabornido also confirmed the presence of a bamboo processing plant in Barangay Mucia owned and operated by the Davao de Sur State College.  (JSGD)
