AGOO, La Union (PIA) – Thousands of devotees and dignitaries from around the world gathered at the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity here on December 6 for the highly anticipated Pontifical Coronation of Nuestra Señora de Caridad de Agoo.
The historic event was officiated by His Excellency, Most Rev. Charles John Brown, D.D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.
The coronation of the centuries-old Marian image marks a spiritual and cultural milestone, recognizing the deep devotion of the faithful to the Blessed Mother under this revered title.
The Pontifical Coronation, approved by the Vatican, is a rare honor bestowed on Marian images of significant historical, spiritual, and cultural importance.
Nuestra Señora de Caridad de Agoo has been a symbol of faith, unity, and hope for generations of devotees, not only in La Union but throughout the Philippines.
Fr. Albert Feliciano, assistant parish priest of the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity, emphasized the importance of genuine faith and devotion during the spiritual gathering.
“Let the truth reside in the heart of every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, because if we have devotion to Mary, our mother and queen, this should bring us closer to the Lord,” Feliciano said.
The priest also encouraged the faithful to allow Mary’s example of humility, obedience, and love to transform their lives and guide them toward a deeper relationship with Christ.
Meanwhile, Mayor Frank Sibuma expressed gratitude to the Apostolic Nuncio and the Catholic Church for recognizing the importance of the Marian image.
“This coronation is a testament to the enduring devotion of our people. It is a moment of grace and inspiration that will remain in our hearts forever,” he shared.
The celebration included a grand procession, liturgical music, and cultural presentations, highlighting the significance of Marian devotion in Filipino culture.
Local officials, religious leaders, and devotees attended the event, turning the town of Agoo into a vibrant center of faith and festivity.
Elizabeth Otero, a devotee from Luna, emphasized that such religious milestones not only renew personal faith but also inspire collective unity among devotees.
“As an active servant of God, I express my gratitude for being part of such a historic occasion as it served as a reminder of the enduring strength and beauty of our shared traditions and beliefs,” Otero stated.
As the crown was placed upon the image, the congregation erupted into joyous applause and prayers, signaling a renewed commitment to faith and tradition.
The Pontifical Coronation of Nuestra Señora de Caridad de Agoo is expected to strengthen the devotion to the Blessed Mother and further solidify Agoo’s reputation as a center of Marian pilgrimage in Northern Luzon.
The municipal government of Agoo extended its gratitude to all who participated in making this momentous event a success, expressing hope that the coronation will inspire spiritual renewal and unity among the faithful.
