VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) – – Over 200 motorcycle enthusiasts from Ilocos Sur revved up their engines to express solidarity with the government’s West Philippine Sea (WPS) advocacy on November 30.
The “Ride for the WPS” event kicked off in Narvacan and concluded in Candon City, passing through Vigan City and Sinait town.
Organized by the Regional Emergency Assistance Communication Team (REACT) Region 1 and REACT-Heritage Group, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and local government units, the ride aimed to raise awareness about the government’s efforts to protect the WPS.
REACT Region 1 is a regional group of REACT Philippines, Inc., the largest civic communications organization in the country, which operates under the close supervision of the Civil Relations Service (CRS) of the AFP.
“We are here supporting the national government initiatives for the WPS, our AFP, and uniformed personnel as they maintain and sustain our ownership in the WPS,” said Dr. Antonio Agustin, REACT 1 Regional Chief.
Each rider paid P500, which included freebies such as shirts, stickers, certificates, and lunch.
As the total amount collected is being tallied, the REACT-Heritage Group announced that 30% of the collection will be donated to the Ilocos Sur Federated Fishermen Association, Inc.
The contribution will be used to assist them based on their needs, whether cash, equipment, or medical kits, depending on what they communicate after discussing it with the group.
Michael Anthony Agustin, a rider from Santa town, said it was his first time joining a ride advocating support for the WPS.
Agustin expressed his joy at the event’s success and emphasized the strong support from the community and the Philippine National Police despite the limited preparation time.
He added, “Filipino tayong lahat, kaya dapat maipakita natin na may unity tayo at tulong-tulong [sa pagsuporta sa WPS]… Hopefully, may part two para mas marami pa ang makasali… at sana mapa-expand natin ito up to mga ibang provinces din.”
(We are all Filipinos, so we should show that we have unity and are helping each other [in supporting the WPS]… Hopefully, there will be a part two so more people can join… and we can expand this to other provinces.)
Recognizing the timely and relevant conduct of the event, Candon City Councilor Godofredo Abrero said, “Your support for our soldiers deployed in the West Philippine Sea is a humanitarian step that strengthens their spirit as they guard and sacrifice for our safety. I also commend your initiative to raise funds for your designated benefactors. This is a true reflection of the Filipino heroic spirit and caring. With your unity, you have proven that our country has hope despite the challenges because of people like you who are willing to help and care for others.”
The ride culminated at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College in Condon City, where a short program was conducted, and the presentation of the AFP’s Communication Plan “Mulat” and information education campaign materials on the WPS were distributed to the participants.
In his message, 1st Civil Relations Group-CRSAFP Commander Jess Pilar thanked the civilian organizations and stakeholders for taking the lead in demonstrating support for protecting and preserving the Philippine maritime territories.
He then urged the public to herald the government’s efforts in managing the challenges faced in the WPS, as collective actions to defend national interests can make a significant difference. (AMB/JMCQ, PIA Ilocos Sur)
