Over 2,700 runners rally for youth empowerment, environmental action in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – In a vibrant display of community unity and environmental commitment, more than 2,700 runners of all ages joined the “Takbo para sa Kalikasan-Kinabukasan-Kaunlaran” Fun Run in this city recently.

Organized by the Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan, Inc. (LINK) and the Office of the Vice Mayor, the event celebrated its 10th anniversary, promoting youth empowerment, sustainability, and the preservation of the West Philippine Sea.

The event aims to inspire young people to engage in eco-friendly initiatives while fostering community involvement for a greener future.

The fun run also highlighted the Philippine Coast Guard’s vital mission to protect the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing the crucial role of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and natural resources.

The event drew runners composed of elementary and high school students as well as representatives from various national agencies.

Vice Mayor Alfredo Pablo Ortega, co-founder of LINK, emphasized the pivotal role of the youth in leading climate action, stressing that their involvement is key to shaping a sustainable future.

“In our 10th year anniversary, it is essential to be in harmony with nature, as this connection is vital in fostering peace among people. The youth, both locally and globally, are calling for urgent change. They are the hope for a better future,” Ortega stated.

The activity also serves as a reminder of the intertwined goals of environmental stewardship and national security.

Participants with the largest delegations, namely, Ilocanos Elementary School, La Union National High School, and Philippine Coast Guard, were honored with special awards and cash prizes, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

Phillip Jerome Posas, one of the youth participants, expressed that joining the run demonstrates his support for LINK’s advocacy in defending nature.

“It’s a simple way to show our love and care for nature, but even small actions like this can be a powerful tool for change,” Posas said.

Proceeds from the fun run will go toward funding youth leadership training, environmental protection initiatives, and various advocacy programs aimed at empowering the next generation of eco-leaders.

The environmental run raised a total of P132,130 in funds. (MJTAB/AMB/KJCR, PIA La Union)
