Over 300 volunteers join coastal clean-up in Batanes

BASCO, Batanes (PIA) In celebration of Farmers’ and Fisherfolk Month, more than 300 volunteers participated in a large-scale coastal clean-up across key areas in Basco, Batanes.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Provincial Office, conducted along Chanarian Beach, Old Basco Port, and Kanyuyan Beach.

The event drew participants from various sectors, including national government agencies, local government units, barangays, and private organizations.

According to Provincial Fisheries Officer Ritchie Rivera, the volunteers collected approximately 1,000 kilograms of mixed waste from the coastal areas.

Rivera said the clean-up significantly improved the environmental condition and overall cleanliness of Basco’s shorelines.

“This joint effort reflects our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and marine conservation,” Rivera stated.

He added that clean coastal waters help sustain marine ecosystems and ensure safe, sustainable seafood for local communities.

Rivera emphasized that the clean-up drive is a testament to what can be accomplished through unity and cooperation.

“It also reinforces the importance of responsible waste management and the Batanes community’s dedication to protecting their natural resources,” he said.

The clean-up campaign aimed to remove waste, raise awareness about marine pollution, and promote long-term environmental responsibility.

Organizers said the activity will help strengthen agency partnerships and encourage continuous community engagement in preserving Batanes’ coastal ecosystems. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
