QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — Some 969 fisherfolk in Navotas City benefited from the rollout of the ‘NavoBangka-buhayan’ program of the city government which anchors the provision of fishing boats and fishing nets to support their livelihood.

“Providing these tools is more than just assistance. It’s about empowering our fisherfolk to uplift their families and contribute meaningfully to our local economy,”  said Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco.

Of this total number of beneficiaries, 44 fishers received 22 fiberglass fishing boats who will have shared ownership of each boat.

Meanwhile, the remaining 925 beneficiaries received fishing nets to support the industry of small-scale fisherfolk in the city.

The local government of Navotas has carefully selected the beneficiaries of the NavoBangka-buhayan based on the socio-economic situation and good moral standing of the city’s registered fisherfolk.

This is to ensure that the program is responsive to the needs of local fisherfolk.

District Representative Toby Tiangco underscored the vital role of fisherfolk in sustaining the vibrant industry of fishing in Navotas as the country’s fishing capital.

“Our fisherfolk are the backbone of Navotas’ identity as the Fishing Capital of the Philippines. Supporting them ensures the sustainability of our heritage and strengthens our community,” said Rep. Tiangco.

The turnover of the fishing equipment coincides with the 119th founding anniversary celebration of Navotas.

This initiative also forms part of the recognition of the Top 10 Most Outstanding Fisherfolk in the city to honor and celebrate the contributions of fishing communities to the local fishing industry. (Navotas PIO/PIA-NCR)
