DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The provincial veterinarian of Pangasinan has called on the public to use alternative ways of welcoming the New Year instead of firecrackers as they pose harm not only to humans but also to animals.
Dr. Arcely Robeniol, officer-in-charge provincial veterinarian, said pyrotechnic devices or firecrackers’ explosions can be very stressful and traumatizing to pets since they have a keen sense of hearing.
“Loud noises from firecrackers are very stressful and frightening for our pets. It’s like torture that can cause them trauma and even serious injuries,” Robeniol said in an interview on Friday.
She said aside from the deafening sound, smoke from fireworks and firecrackers may cause pets’ disorientation, loss of appetite, and upset stomach.
Robeniol added that pets can also accidentally eat the remnants of the firecrackers which will lead to gastrointestinal problems like vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
She advised that during the celebration, pet owners should provide their pets with a quiet and safe spot to stay.
“During the revelry, get them indoors and make sure to provide your pets a cover for their ears. Also, give them anti-anxiety wrap to make them feel safe,” she shared.
Robeniol also urged the public to provide temporary shelter for stray animals to prevent them from becoming stressed or exposed to loud explosions. (JCR/AMB/EMSA/PIA Pangasinan)
