QUEZON CITY (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his vision for a strong and capable Philippine Army (PA) during his speech at the Change of Command Ceremony held on August 7, 2023 (Monday) at Fort Andres Bonifacio in Taguig City.
He commended General Romeo Brawner Jr., the former PA Commanding General and current AFP Chief of Staff, for his leadership in developing the army into a progressive and resilient force. Under General Brawner’s guidance, significant strides were made in defense against insurgency and terrorism, dismantling guerilla fronts, and contributing to the development of conflict-affected communities. President Marcos extended his respect and admiration to General Brawner and wished him success in his new role.
He then welcomed and congratulated Lieutenant General Roy Galido, the new PA Commanding General. He emphasized the importance of working collaboratively with the citizenry and the civilian government to build an army that is agile, adaptable, and competitive. The President expressed confidence in Lt. Gen. Galido’s leadership, emphasizing the need for perseverance and dedication in achieving the vision of a strong and capable army.
Also highlighted in his speech is the importance of international engagement and cooperation, urging them to enhance communication, interoperability, and joint exercises with foreign counterparts. He encouraged them to protect the shared identity of the nation and transform it into a world-class force that ensures national security, peace, and pride.
President Marcos assured the PA of his administration’s commitment to supporting them through the modernization. He emphasized the joint effort to enhance the internal and external security of the Philippines, creating a conducive environment for the comprehensive growth and empowerment of the people.
Recognizing the evolving nature of modern warfare, he emphasized the need to invest in advanced technology, equipment, and training to keep up with the changing landscape of national and international security threats.
Moreover, he also stressed the significance of intelligence gathering, cyber defense, and counter-terrorism efforts to safeguard the nation’s interests. By staying ahead of emerging threats, the PA can better protect the Filipino people and contribute to regional stability.
The PA were guaranteed with adequate resources, healthcare, education, and welfare support, he recognized the sacrifices and contributions of the soldiers and their families. By prioritizing their well-being and professional development, he believes that the army can reach new heights of excellence and efficiency.
President Marcos concluded his speech, outlining his vision for a strong and capable Philippine Army. He envisions an army that is well-trained, well-equipped, and adaptive to changing circumstances.
