MANILA, (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has marked April 22, 2025 (Tuesday) as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of Nora Aunor, the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, whose birth name was Nora Cabaltera Villamayor.
In Proclamation 870, signed on Monday, the President ordered that flags be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset at all government buildings and facilities both domestically and overseas. This tribute aligns with Republic Act 8491, which mandates that the flag be displayed at half-mast on the day of burial for a National Artist.
“The death of National Artist Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, known to many as Nora Aunor, represents a significant loss for the Filipino people and our cultural landscape,” President Marcos said in the proclamation. “As a nation, we stand in solidarity with her family and friends during this time of sorrow and reflection.”
Marcos emphasized Aunor’s remarkable impact on Philippine cinema, television, and music, asserting that her contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural heritage.
“Her talent, commitment, and artistry not only set high standards in the arts but also inspired countless actors, filmmakers, and audiences, both in the Philippines and around the world,” he added.
Aunor, often referred to as the “Superstar” of Philippine cinema, appeared in 170 films and garnered numerous awards from various local and international bodies.
In 2022, she was honored as the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts through Proclamation 1390 signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The state funeral for Aunor began with arrival honors Tuesday morning at the Arroceros Forest Park in Manila, followed by a necrological service at the Metropolitan Theater at 9 a.m. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
