PBBM: Navotas fish, seafood now safe to eat after oil spill response

MANILA, (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday, September 12, visited Navotas City to distribute assistance to 8,600 fisherfolk and their families affected by an oil spill incident earlier this year. During the event, he announced that fish and seafood are now safe for consumption.

Good news: fish and other seafood are now safe to serve on our tables,” the President assured the crowd, adding that the quality of water and air in Navotas is now suitable for public health.

Addressing the attendees at the Navotas Sports Complex, President Marcos expressed gratitude for the local officials and emphasized the importance of understanding the challenges faced by the community.

He highlighted the government’s prompt action in response to the oil spill caused by the sunken MTKR Terranova off Bataan, which impacted the livelihoods of many fishermen.

Despite the strong rains and flooding in late July, we learned about the sinking of several ships, which not only affected the waters but also the livelihoods of thousands of fisherfolk,” he said. “However, instead of losing hope, the government acted quickly to provide assistance and address the oil leak.”

The President reported that the Philippine Coast Guard has successfully sealed the oil leak and removed nearly 1.4 million liters of oil from the waters. He noted that the siphoning operations are nearing completion, with only water remaining in the affected area.

Marcos also addressed ongoing discussions regarding compensation for those affected by the spill, stating that government agencies are in talks with the owners of the Terranova to ensure accountability for the damage caused.

He announced that over 8,600 fisherfolk in Navotas will receive assistance through the Presidential Assistance to Fisherfolk and Families (PAFF) program. Additionally, the Office of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez distributed 10 kilos of rice to each attendee at the event.

This assistance is not just a symbol of support; it represents our commitment to ensuring that we do not abandon our fellow citizens, especially during difficult times,” he said.

In his speech, President Marcos also highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements in Navotas to prevent future flooding and urged the community to participate in clean-up and waste management initiatives.

He concluded by encouraging unity and resilience among the people of Navotas, emphasizing that together they can overcome challenges and build a stronger future. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
