PBBM visits Sulu, boosting support for farmers and fisherfolk

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay (PIA) – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited the province of Sulu on July 5, 2024, bolstering support for the agricultural sector and local communities.

This visit is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to aid farmers, fisherfolk, and families through the Presidential Assistance to Farmers, Fisherfolk, and Families (PAFF) initiative and would benefit around 10,000 beneficiaries in Sulu.

Upon his arrival, President Marcos personally hands over cash assistance amounting to PhP10,000 to select farmers and fisherfolk affected by the El Niño phenomenon, aiming to provide relief and support to those who are the foundation of the local economy.

In his address, President Marcos underscored the pivotal role of this assistance in supporting the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk and the entire province of Sulu. 

“We are here to deliver government assistance, to support you in your recovery from the challenges brought by El Niño, and to listen to your concerns. May the aid we bring strengthen your livelihoods and further fortify your province,” Marcos said.

Through a whole-of-government approach, agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided PhP10,000 cash aid to over 5,000 farmers and fisherfolk in Sulu province under their Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP).

The Office of the President also gave PhP10 million to the provincial government of Sulu intended for distribution to the remaining beneficiaries, ensuring that more residents receive the necessary support.

The Office of the House Speaker also distributed 5-kilo sacks of rice to the residents who attended the event.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) also distributed farm equipment and inputs worth PhP2.05 million to 20 farmers associations.

The president emphasized that the government is one with the residents of Sulu and of the entire nation in developing the agricultural sector and make everyone’s dream come into reality. 

“Rest assured that we will fulfill our promise to help all of you, especially farmers, fisherfolk and your families. Through the Bagong Pilipinas initiative, we will be your partners in flourishing your sector and achieving your dreams,” Marcos added. (EDT/RBI/PIA9-Zamboanga Sibugay)
