MANILA — President Ferdinand R. Marcos will not attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this month and has designated Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo to represent the Chief Executive, Malacañang said on Thursday.

“The President will not be attending the UN General Assembly. Instead, he will be ably represented by Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, who will articulate the country’s responses to global challenges, which we assert should be resolved within the framework of peace and cooperation enshrined in the UN Charter,” Presidential Communications Office Secretary Cesar Chavez said in a statement.

The UNGA is the main policy-making organ of the global organization, providing a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations.

Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The Assembly meets in regular sessions from September to December each year, discussing specific issues through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, which lead to the adoption of resolutions. (PND)
