PCW Statement on Candidate’s Inappropriate Remarks and Call to Champion Equality Beyond the Election

The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) expresses deep concern over a widely circulated video in which a political candidate made sexist and demeaning remarks about women in the nursing profession. The candidate’s statement suggesting that female scholars must meet specific physical standards to be deemed effective is not only offensive but also fundamentally discriminatory.

Such comments reinforce the notion that women’s participation in important fields like healthcare should be limited by superficial criteria, rather than by their competence, dedication, or expertise. The nursing profession, a cornerstone of the healthcare system, is essential to public welfare, and any attempt to belittle its practitioners, especially through sexist rhetoric, diminishes the integrity of the profession and its vital role in society.

PCW strongly affirms that women are invaluable contributors across all sectors of society. Their worth lies not in how they look, but in their competencies and their dedication to perform their role in whatever profession or endeavor that they choose. Remarks that objectify and trivialize women reinforce a culture of gender-based discrimination, limit women’s opportunities, and undermine their essential role in nation-building. While PCW recognizes the value of providing scholarships to women, particularly in fields like STEM, it is imperative that such programs uphold the fundamental principle of equality and inclusivity. Gender equality is not about favoring one gender over another; it is about creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of sex or physical attributes, have equal access to opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential. The Magna Carta of Women clearly states that no opportunity should be denied on the basis of gender.

PCW commends the vigilance of the public in holding leaders accountable for their discriminatory behaviour and rhetoric. However, this must extend beyond the campaign period. True leadership is reflected not only in promises made during elections but in action taken once elected. Upholding equality and respect should be a consistent commitment, not a seasonal stance as the fight for gender equality is far from over.

PCW urges all leaders and aspiring public officials to refrain from using harmful or demeaning language and to uphold the principle of equality in their words and actions during this campaign season and beyond. Instead, they must focus on presenting real, tangible solutions that uplift all Filipinos, regardless of gender. The Philippines deserves leaders who promote respect, fairness, and inclusivity, and who will actively champion the progress we have fought so hard to achieve, rather than hinder it.

Let this be the last time we hear such archaic and harmful views from those who seek to serve the people. We continue to support any move that the Commission on Elections undertakes regarding erring candidates who violate its resolutions on gender-responsive campaigns.
