CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) — The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Isabela convened to plan for strategic actions to avert the possible effects of La Niña in the agriculture sector.
The preparedness plan was to address the possible effects of the rainy season for the last two quarters of the year, since Isabela is known to be one of the main producers of corn and rice in the country.
Clinton Bumanglang of PhilRice-Isabela said their office has formulated an adaptation plan to include strengthening climate resilience field schools in high-risk areas, promoting high-input farming technologies in low-risk zones, and implementing enhanced farm mechanization.
Gerico Gibe of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Region 2 said they have already prepared and are ready to execute measures and provide support services to the fish farmers in the region.
Gibe urged fisherfolk to always adhere to local advisories and safety precautions at sea and discussed strategies for sustainable aquaculture, including emergency harvests and daily pond monitoring.
He also encouraged fishermen to register their motorized boats to facilitate access to and availing of financial assistance after a calamity.
Cagayan Valley Research Center’s (CVRC) Rolando D. Pedro also presented interventions for La Ñina, including adjusting the planting calendar, providing silage bags, and subsidizing insurance and post-harvest machinery. (MEG – PIA Isabela)
