PDRRMO: No casualties in Romblon after severe tropical storm Kristine

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Romblon reported that no casualties were recorded in the province due to Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, despite the storm’s impact over several days.

According to Major Joseph Menorca, the newly appointed PDRRM Officer, there were numerous landslides, but no fatalities were reported.

Although there were damages to homes due to strong winds, fallen trees, and flooding, Menorca emphasized the government’s effort to have no reported deaths.

Eight municipalities implemented pre-emptive evacuations, resulting in the relocation of 244 families, or 786 individuals, due to the risk of floods, landslides, and storm surges.

The PDRRMO noted that the number of evacuees was relatively low since the province was not directly hit by the storm.

If weather conditions improve, evacuees may return to their homes as early as today.

Menorca assured that all displaced residents would receive assistance from both the provincial government and local governments, in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Some areas are still experiencing water and power interruptions, with ongoing repairs led by Romblon Electric Cooperative and Tablas Island Electric Cooperative.

Menorca added that the PDRRMO continues to monitor various areas to ensure that aid reaches all Romblon residents in need during this difficult time. (PJF/PIA MIMAROPA-Romblon)
