DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Zamboanga del Norte expresses its strong support for the proposed ordinance prohibiting the release of balloons and sky lanterns within the city’s airspace.
The measure aims to mitigate environmental pollution and protect biodiversity from the harmful effects of plastic waste.
“Balloons and sky lanterns become litter once released, posing serious risks to land and marine ecosystems. Balloon debris endangers wildlife like sea turtles and seabirds, leading to ingestion and entanglement,” PENRO Chief of the Technical Services Division Attorney Erwin W. Cabilin said during a public hearing at the city’s Sangguniang Panlungsod.
“Materials such as mylar, foil and latex take years to degrade and can block the digestive tracts of marine animals,” he added.
The city’s proactive approach highlights the ordinance supports national and global efforts to reduce pollution and protect marine life.
In support of the proposed ordinance, PENRO Zamboanga del Norte submitted a position paper reinforcing the environmental risks associated with balloon and sky lantern releases. The document emphasized the need for sustainable alternatives and the importance of local policies in reducing environmental hazards.
PENRO reaffirms its commitment to sustainable policies that protect the environment and promote biodiversity conservation. The office also looks forward to the ordinance’s implementation and its positive impact on reducing environmental waste in Dipolog City. (CCP/PIA-9 with reports from DENR Zamboanga Peninsula)
