PH Army deploys disaster response group to Northern Luzon provinces

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Philippine Army (PA) has deployed personnel and equipment for disaster response in Northern Luzon provinces hit by Typhoon Nika (Toraji), as well as those threatened by the subsequent weather disturbances.

The 5th Infantry “Star” Division, the Army’s primary infantry unit in Northern Luzon headquartered in Isabela, immediately mobilized its Emergency Response Company (ERC) for humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) to the affected communities.

Division Commander, MGen Gulliver Señires, vowed that the “Startroopers” are always ready for any eventualities that may arise, especially in times of calamities.

Cpt. Adrian Lunggat heads the deployed 19-member Star Division ERC, composed of well-trained rescuers, paramedics, drivers, and civil-military operations members.

The group coordinated with the Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Offices (PDRRMOs) of Isabela and Cagayan and checked in as responders to the provinces’ Incident Management Committee.

According to Cpt. Lunggat, they are in close coordination with the local leaders of Isabela and Cagayan for the proper deployment of the ERC.

He added that they are keeping their eyes on the low-lying areas within the province of Isabela and Cagayan, which are susceptible and at risk of flooding and landslides as a result of heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the Division’s 95th Infantry (SALAKNIB) Battalion has been assisting barangays in the provinces that suffered damages due to the typhoons.

Also, the 17th Infantry Battalion, Alpha (Resilient) Company, under Batallion Commander, Lt. Col. Ford Alsiyao, likewise conducted HADR operations and assisted in delivering relief packs to residents in the province of Apayao. (PIA DMD)
