PH gov’t aids El Niño-hit farmers, fisherfolk in Romblon

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The Philippine government extended various aids to farmers, fisherfolk, and families affected by the long drought in Romblon on July 18 despite the bad weather experienced in the province.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. was scheduled to lead the distribution program at Romblon State University, Odiongan, Romblon, however, heavy rains and flooding in the area forced him to alter his plans.

Despite his absence, the program proceeded, led by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr., Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, and Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.

Data from various national government agencies show that approximately P162 million in financial assistance, services, loans, and subsidies were distributed, with particular focus on the towns of Odiongan and San Andres, both declared under a state of calamity earlier this year due to El Niño.

Of the total amount, P3 million came from the DA for its African Swine Fever indemnification and P1.039 million from the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) for the Operation and Maintenance Subsidy for irrigators associations (IAs).

The government will construct P26 million worth of irrigation systems in Danao Sur, Dubduban, Gabawan, and Taboboan-Tulay. A cheque worth P10 million will be given under the Survival and Recovery Loan Program of the Agricultural Credit Policy Council.

The Agri-Negosyo Loan Program offered P5 million to farmers, while the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will provide P774,537 in financial assistance under its Integrated Livelihood Program.
Additionally, the Office of the President extended P16.64 million in financial aid to local government units in Romblon.

The DSWD also extended P10,000 each to the beneficiaries in Romblon, totaling P100 million in financial assistance.

The DA provided 120 sacks of yellow corn seed, approximately 360 bottles of organic foliar fertilizer, fertilizer discount vouchers, farming equipment, and other forms of assistance.

The Bureau of Soils and Water Management donated a Composting Facility for Biodegradable Waste, while the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) distributed 2,200 sacks of Agricultural Grade Salt Fertilizers.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) prepared 45 starter tool kits and conducted the Special Training for Employment Program.
