Phil. Red Cross Albay calls on blood donors

LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY (PIA5/Albay)—Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Albay Chapter calls for voluntary blood donation of all active donors and healthy individuals due to its ‘’critical status’’ or insufficient supply of blood in their blood bank.

‘’Actually, January is considered a lean month, which means that only a few donate their blood or the stock of our supply is low. That is why we are declaring that it is in a critical status because there are instances that we might not serve those who requested blood,’’ PRC Albay Chapter Administrator Rose Rivero stated.

Rivero emphasized that PRC Albay is trying to contact all active donors and also looking for donors to sustain the supply of blood in their facility. This is to provide the needed blood to  those in need during this lean season.

‘’We are actually encouraging all albayanos between 18 to 60 years old to visit our blood service facility to donate blood and respond to our call,’’Rivero stated.

She stated that the blood in their facility might only last for at least one or two weeks due to its critical status.

‘’You can also go to our mass blood donation [sites] to donate your blood,’’Rivero added.

PRC Albay announced that a blood mass donation will be conducted at Tabaco National High School, Tabaco City, Friday, Jan. 13  from 7:30AM to 2PM with a theme,’’Dugo mo, Tabang sa Buhay ko.’’

A donor must weigh at least 110 lbs. or approximately 50kg, 12.5 g/dl hemoglobin, with blood pressure between 90-140 mmHg and 60-100 mmHg.

Donors between 16-17 years old should provide parental consent to donate their blood.

Rivero imparted,’’Blood donors aren’t called heroes for nothing, its number one benefit is knowing that your blood will be instrumental to save someone’s life, allows you to know your blood type and be examined by a doctor.’’

This activity is supported by  Republic Act. No 7719 also known as the National Blood Services Act of 1994 which ’’promotes voluntary blood donation to provide sufficient supply of safe blood and to regulate blood banks which aims to inculcate public awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act.’’(PIA5/Albay)
