Philippine Army boosts communication systems for enhanced security, disaster response

MANILA, (PIA) — The Philippine Army is actively enhancing its Command and Control Communications and Cyber Systems (C4S) to ensure effective communication and security during military operations and disaster response efforts.

Col. Jose R. Perlas Jr., Deputy G6 of the Philippine Army, emphasized the need for clear communication across ranks to avoid miscommunication. “We deliver messages from the commander down to the lowest rank to ensure that instructions are properly received,” he said during the Bangon Bayang Mahal program on Radyo Pilipinas.

To improve interoperability, the Army has invested in satellite and repeater systems, especially in Cotabato, enabling better coordination between civilian responders and military units during disaster situations.

This investment aims to streamline operations and enhance responsiveness during emergencies.

Perlas highlighted the significance of advanced communication systems in securing military operations, particularly in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, when the military’s HF radio system was the only means of communication with responders in Tacloban.

The need for secure and advanced communication is paramount in coordinating troops and commanders effectively.

Unlike in the past, where analogue systems were vulnerable to interception, the Philippine Army now utilizes advanced systems that significantly mitigate the risk of security breaches,” Col. Perlas explained.

He also warned against potential threats, stating, “The biggest threat here is compromising our communication, which could put sensitive documents and, ultimately, our national security at risk.”

In addition to strengthening military communication, Perlas stressed the importance of cyber awareness among civilians to combat identity theft and misinformation, particularly on social media.

If everyone is concerned about our cybersecurity, we can protect our identities and avoid falling victim to scams,” he added.

The Philippine Army’s initiative reflects a commitment to modernizing its communication capabilities, ensuring that it remains resilient and effective in both military operations and disaster response scenarios. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
