Philippine, Vietnam Armies explore defense collaboration

MANILA, (PIA) — Army Chief Lt. Gen. Roy M. Galido emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the Philippine Army and the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) during his official visit to Vietnam from April 7 to April 10, 2025.

The visit began with a courtesy call to Gen. Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the VPA, followed by a bilateral meeting with Lt. Gen. Nguyen Van Nghia, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, at the Ministry of Defense Headquarters in Hanoi.

Lt. Gen. Galido observed a capability demonstration at the VPA’s Special Forces Academy and toured the Viettel High Tech Company, a key player in advancing Vietnam’s military technology and defense capabilities.

The primary goal of Galido’s visit was to enhance camaraderie and strengthen bilateral engagements between the two armies, building on the foundation laid by the 2015 Joint Statement on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the Philippines and Vietnam.

The discussions during the bilateral meeting focused on mutual interests, including the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and information. The talks also aimed to identify opportunities for capability development, potentially leading to the establishment of formal Terms of Reference in the future.

This collaboration signifies a commitment to fortify defense capabilities in the region as both nations navigate contemporary security challenges. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
