MANILA, (PIA) — House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez reaffirmed the Philippines’ strong support for the ASEAN Code of Conduct concerning the West Philippine Sea (WPS), emphasizing adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

During the Manila Dialogue on the South China Sea, Romualdez said the WPS issue extends beyond territorial claims; it is also about national pride and economic security.

He emphasized the importance of Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN’s role and the adherence to international law in achieving peaceful and just resolutions to disputes in the region.

Our stance on these waters is not merely geographical; it represents our national pride, economic security, and the legacy we wish to pass on to future generations. This ruling establishes our rights under international law, affirming them as legitimate and recognized,” Romualdez said.

It refutes any claims beyond the bounds of UNCLOS, safeguarding our sovereign rights within our exclusive economic zone,” he added.

He urged ASEAN member nations to unite around the Code of Conduct to ensure lasting peace and cooperation in the region.

As Speaker, I affirm the legislative branch’s commitment to strengthening maritime security. We are enhancing our coast guard, investing in research, and collaborating with regional allies for a free, open, and stable South China Sea,” he added.

The Philippines continues to bolster security in the WPS through initiatives such as skills training for the Philippine Coast Guard and joint maritime exercises with allied nations.

Romualdez called on Filipinos to support government efforts in asserting the country’s rights in the WPS.

From fishermen to legislators, each of us plays a role in safeguarding our legacy. The WPS resources feed millions, support our economy, and are integral to a legacy we must protect for future generations,” he concluded. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
