Philippines Takes the Global Stage in Health Care

It was a landmark achievement for the Philippines in global health as Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa took center stage for being elected President of the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The election symbolizes the Philippines’ commitment to addressing health issues worldwide and highlights Filipino healthcare workers’ invaluable contributions to the ongoing battle against global pandemics.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Press Officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his excitement and pride over this historic election. Castro said the President believed it was also a recognition of the heroic contribution of Filipino healthcare workers worldwide to ending the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WHA presidency presented an opportunity for the Philippines to show its commitment to quality healthcare. This aligns with national policies aimed at creating viable solutions to the world’s health challenges.

“Dagdag ng Pangulo, pagkakataon din ang WHA presidency para maipakita sa mundo ang pagbibigay-halaga ng Pilipinas sa kalusugan. Tumutugma rin aniya ang mga polisiya ng bansa sa mga minumungkahing solusyon sa paglutas ng health issues ng mundo,” Castro said.

The sentiment resonates deeply, as nurses and medical professionals from the Philippines have become frontliners in many countries, demonstrating dedication and resilience in the face of adversity.

As the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), the WHA plays a significant role in shaping global health policy. With Herbosa at the helm, the assembly can focus on important health issues that transcend borders.

After three years of negotiations, the assembly has already achieved a significant milestone by adopting the landmark Pandemic Agreement, reflecting a collaborative effort to enhance global preparedness against future health crises.

The election of Herbosa signifies a turning point for the Philippines, affirming its role as an influential player in the global health landscape. This moment is more than just about leadership; it embodies the resilience and unwavering spirit of Filipinos who have persevered through unprecedented challenges posed by health emergencies.

Herbosa became the first Philippine health official elected to the WHA, the World Health Organization (WHO) decision-making body. His presidency carries the weight of expectations and responsibilities.

Herbosa’s tenure will run May 19 to 27, a crucial period during which member states will convene to discuss pressing health concerns, during which delegates from the 194 WHO member states adopted the landmark Pandemic Agreement after three years of negotiations.#
