QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded nine volcanic earthquakes within a 24-hour observation period from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday around Taal Volcano in Batangas.

Its October 6 Taal Volcano Bulletin also said that the quakes included two volcanic tremors that lasted six minutes.

Further, Taal also had six minor phreatic eruptions, lasting from one to three minutes, and a minor phreatomagmatic eruption that lasted for four minutes.

PhiVolcs said that 30 minor eruptive events have been recorded since September 22, 2024.

Phreatic events resulted in traces of ash deposits in some areas, particularly in Agoncillo, Batangas.

This information is based on monitoring and coordination efforts with the five nearby local government units (LGUs) on Taal Volcano Island, namely: Agoncillo, Talisay, Laurel, San Nicolas, and Balete.

Volcanic fluid

State volcanologists also observed on Sunday, October 7, an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake.

PhiVolcs also said that the Taal Caldera has a long-term deflation, while the general northern and southeastern flanks of the volcano island showed short-term inflation.

Entry into the volcano island, a Permanent Danger Zone, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, is prohibited.

Possible hazards that can occur include steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. (PIA DMD)
