PIA-9 head urges school community to foster gender inclusivity, equity

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY (PIA) –  Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Regional Head Noemi B. Edaga has urged students, parents, teachers, and other members of the academic community at Sibugay Technical Institute Inc. (STII) to raise awareness, provide support, and foster dialogue about gender issues.

She made this call during the launching of the Gender and Development (GAD) Corner at STII College.

I encourage you all to actively engage with this space, voice your concerns, and work together to drive positive change,” RH Edaga said.

The GAD corner is a café-style reading nook, adorned with Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials that promote community engagement and raises awareness of gender-related issues.

RH Edaga emphasized that the establishment of the GAD corner is part of the government’s efforts and initiatives to promote gender equality within communities, and that everyone has an important role to play in achieving this goal.

In her speech, Edaga highlighted recent reports showing that gender disparities persist in many colleges and universities in the region. While female students often excel academically, there are still significant gaps in their representation in leadership roles and decision-making positions within student organizations.

STII B.O.T. President Ma. Bella Chiong Javier and PIA-9 Head Edaga, along with the attendees, beam with joy after the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the launch of the GAD Corner.

Moreover, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual orientations (LGBTQ+) students face unique challenges. Issues such as discrimination, lack of support, and limited visibility can hinder their educational experience and well-being. A study by the Commission on Human Rights has shown that LGBTQ+ individuals often encounter stigma and harassment, adversely affecting their mental health and academic performance.

Through your enthusiasm and the resources provided we can address these challenges and work towards a future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and thrive,” RH Edaga said.

PIA-9 extends its gratitude to STII College, under the leadership of School President Dr. Eufemio Javier Jr. and Board of Trustee President Ma. Bella Chiong Javier, for their commitment to advancing gender development and promoting gender equality.

The establishment of the GAD Corner aligns with Republic Act No. 9710, also known as the Magna Carta of Women, which mandates the integration of GAD in educational institutions. (JPA/ CCP/PIA9)
