PIA, PUP team up to create tele-university, more accessible free higher education

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) on Friday aims to create a more accessible avenue that will help students finish their studies without worrying about other kinds of expenses.

Under the agreement, PIA and PUP will In particular, it seeks to establish a tele-university, providing a learning platform from televisions.  

Makakatulong kayo sa pangarap naming tele-university. Magiging platform po siguro yung TV station para dun kami magcoconduct ng lecture. Tapos yung mga estudyante na walang venue para makapunta sa eskwelahan magagamit natin na paraan iyon,” shared PUP President Manuel M. Muhi during his speech. 

(Translation: This will help us in our dream of creating a tele-university. A TV station will be the platform for the conduct of the lecture. Students who struggle to go to schools can use this as a way to learn.)

Furthermore, PIA will be responsible in disseminating the different programs and projects of PUP in pursuit of a more attainable higher education. 

“Alam namin na ang PIA ay magandang katuwang sa paglulunsad ng mga ganitong programa. Para ng sa gayon ay maging nationdwide ang approach natin na makatulong sa mga kasamahan na mga pilipino na gustong makakuha ng diploma,” President Muhi added. 

(Translation: We know that PIA is the right partner for this endeavor. For us to make this approach nationwide, helping more Filipinos who want to get a diploma.)

For his part, PIA Director-General Jose A. Torres Jr., shared that it is a privilege and honor to work with PUP in this endeavor. 

“Tuwang tuwa po ako na na-imbitahan at inanyahahan ang PIA ng PUP sa pagsulong ng edukasyon. Ito po ay taos pusong karangalan,” he said. 

(Translation: I am delighted that PUP invited PAI to join their advocacy in the advancement of education. This is sincerely an honor.)

“Mabuti nalang po isa sa prayoridad ng Bagong Pilipinas, ng ating Mahal na Pangulo ay ang edukasyon at pag-aaral, at may mga institusyon po tulad ng PUP,” Director-General Torres added.

Apart from tele-university, PUP already has some established projects making higher education reachable to learners. 

Education on Wheels

Education on Wheels is an initiative of PUP bringing quality education closer to communities through a converted bus into a classroom.   

Micro-credentialing

Micro-credentialing is a mechanism where students can pursue training in PUP which can be converted into a subject. These subjects can be credited in their chosen course as well. 

Lingap Komunidad

Lingap Komunidad is a project of PUP offering various training to parents. The trainings are facilitated by the Technical Education And Skills Development Authority (TESDA) wherein they will receive a National Certificate (NC) upon completion. (PIA-NCR/JVD)
