PIA taps barangay secretaries of Maayon town as information officers

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — The Philippine Information Agency established a network of Barangay Information Officers (BIO) in Maayon town, Capiz on Feb. 17.

The network of communication frontliners in Maayon is composed of barangay secretaries of the town’s 32 villages.

Representatives from the national government agencies – the Social Security System, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department of Labor and Employment presented their programs, projects, activities and updates before the newly formed BIO network (BION).

“Ini nga information makabulig gid ini sang dako sa amon, sa akon mga kaupod, kay every barangay mangin updated na kami kon ano gakatabo sa aton bilog nga probinsya kag nasyonal pa gid,” Razel Descalsota, barangay secretary of Brgy. Carataya, Maayon said.

(The information we learned will surely help me and my fellow participants because we feel empowered through updated information from the province up to the national level.)

The same network was organized by the PIA in Ivisan, Pontevedra, Jamindan, Mambusao, and Pilar towns in 2024, where the BIOs serve as force multipliers of government information for the agency and the local government unit.

Maayon town mayor Raymond Malapajo commended PIA’s efforts in organizing the BION.

“We will put in proper perspective your being knowledgeable on what is happening in your barangay to help in building up our government and in fighting fake news and misleading information by fact-checking the news and reports we convey to our constituents,” he said.

He urged the participants to help in promoting a better understanding and appreciation of government projects in their respective communities.(AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
