Pinacanauan Flood Control Strengthens Riverbank Protection in San Mariano, Isabela

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a 372-meter-long flood control structure along the Pinacanauan River in Barangay Marannao, San Mariano, Isabela, to protect communities from severe flooding and erosion.

DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region II OIC-Director Mathias L. Malenab, said that the project will address flooding and riverbank erosion in Barangay Marannao through a more stable river defense system built to mitigate damage caused by strong water currents during heavy rains.
The Pinacanauan flood control structure was made of gabions—stone-filled wire baskets designed to reinforce the riverbank and minimize water flow impact. It stands 11 meters high and 6 meters wide, with a filter cloth installed behind it to improve drainage and prevent soil erosion.

“Families living near the riverside now have better protection from severe flooding, reducing the risk of property damage and displacement during heavy rains,” said OIC Director Malenab.

Implemented by the DPWH Isabela 3rd District Engineering Office, the flood control project was funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) in the amount of ₱71.9 million.

The DPWH is fully committed to the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s program to strengthen the country’s disaster resilience and ensures the safety of vulnerable communities against natural calamities.
