For many Filipinos, starting a family is exciting but also worrisome because pregnancy and childbirth can cost up to P100,000, depending on the hospital and delivery type.
But did you know that the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) offers maternity benefits to help ease the burden of high costs and ensure access to quality healthcare for mothers?
Camie Rosario, a PhilHealth member, learned about the value of the Normal Spontaneous Delivery (NSD) and Cesarean Section (CS) Delivery Packages during a local radio program in Dagupan City.
“I may not be expecting a child yet, but hearing about the NSD and CS packages on the radio reassured me. It’s comforting to know PhilHealth will support me with expenses when the time comes,” Rosario shared during an interview on May 20.
Joseph Manuel, public relations officer of PhilHealth Ilocos, said the agency’s maternity benefits reflect its commitment to protecting mothers and newborns in their critical stage of life.
“For NSD in hospital facilities, we provide P9,750. For non-hospital facilities such as lying-ins and birthing homes, we now provide P12,675,” Manuel said.
PhilHealth also offers a Maternity Care Package covering prenatal checkups and delivery. This includes at least four prenatal visits (with one in the third trimester) and the delivery itself.
The benefit for hospital-based deliveries is P12,675, while for deliveries at non-hospital facilities, P15,600 will be deducted from the total bill.
For CS deliveries, the benefit covers up to P37,050.
“Here’s the good news. If you choose ward accommodation, PhilHealth can cover the full cost of your confinement—whether at a public or private PhilHealth-accredited hospital,” Manuel added.
Eligibility and requirements
To qualify, members must have paid at least three months of contributions within the six months before the expected delivery date.
To claim the benefit, the member must present an updated Member Data Record (MDR) and PhilHealth Identification Card upon hospital admission, and the delivery must take place at a PhilHealth-accredited healthcare facility.
Accredited facilities can be viewed at https://www.philhealth.gov.ph/partners/providers/facilities/accredited/.
