MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) led the nation in commemorating the National Day of Remembrance for the Sacrifice of the SAF 44 with the theme, “Courage Beyond Measure: Remembering the Sacrifice of the SAF 44 for Peace,” on January 25, 2025, at Camp General Mariano N. Castañeda. The solemn event, held at the Philippine National Police Academy, honored the legacy of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos who courageously gave their lives during the tragic Mamasapano operation a decade ago.
In the spirit of shared aspirations, the PNP reflected on the words of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.: “Ang pangarap ninyo, ay pangarap ko rin,” echoing the SAF 44’s vision of peace, justice, and security for every Filipino. Their dream of a safer and stronger nation continues to serve as a guiding light for the PNP and the country.
The program commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen heroes. The wreaths were offered by Mrs. Julie N. Cayang-o, widow of the late PCpl Gringo C. Cayang-o, PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, and Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Juanito Victor C. Remulla Jr., who also served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.
SAF Director, Police Major General Mark D. Pespes, delivered the welcome remarks, emphasizing the significance of this day in honoring the selfless sacrifice of the SAF 44. A heartfelt audiovisual presentation followed, offering a poignant tribute to the gallant commandos and their families.
Mrs. Julie N. Cayang-o, representing the families of the SAF 44, shared an emotional message, saying: “Ten years may seem like a long time, but it feels like yesterday. Today is not just an occasion of mourning but also one of reflection and gratitude. We remember the bravery and unwavering commitment of these men who faced danger with courage. To my fellow widows and families, we share a bond forged in heartache yet strengthened by love, support, and resilience. To our government officials and PNP leaders, thank you for ensuring that their sacrifices are recognized and their legacy lives on.”
Meanwhile, Secretary Remulla, in his speech, reminded the nation of the sacrifices made by the SAF 44 and the enduring lessons they left behind. He reflected on how, even after ten years, the sacrifice of the SAF 44 remains etched in the hearts of the Filipino people. He emphasized that their dedication to service and the honor they upheld will never be forgotten. While justice may remain elusive, Secretary Remulla stressed the importance of focusing on how the nation moves forward. He highlighted that the foundation of the PNP is built on sacrifice, devotion, and service to the country. He called on the nation to honor the SAF 44 by strengthening institutions, reforming systems, and always upholding the ideals of duty and love for the nation.
PNP Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, paid tribute to the SAF 44, their families, and their comrades: “Today, we stand united to honor the memory of the 44 brave men who gave their lives in the line of duty. They were not just names on a roster but sons, fathers, brothers, and friends—men of valor and selflessness who faced overwhelming odds to uphold peace and security. To their families, we stand with you, not just today but every day, to honor their memory.”
He further emphasized the enduring commitment of the PNP: “Their sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of peace and justice. As we commemorate their heroism, let us renew our pledge to uphold the ideals for which they fought.”
The ceremony concluded with a collective resolve to honor the legacy of the SAF 44 by continuing their mission of service and devotion to the Filipino people. The SAF 44 will forever remain symbols of unparalleled bravery and selflessness, immortalized in the hearts of a grateful nation.(PNP)
