PNP Media Security Vanguards to protect journalists

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Philippine National Police (PNP) launched a new initiative Tuesday aimed at enhancing the safety and security of media practitioners nationwide, affirming its commitment to protect journalists from threats and violence nationwide.

The PNP Media Security Vanguards program, unveiled at the Philippine Information Agency Auditorium in Quezon City, represents a proactive response to the urgent need for protective measures for journalists and media workers. The program, in partnership with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, Department of Justice, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Commission on Elections, is dedicated to enhancing the safety and security of media practitioners.

The PNP Media Security Vanguards reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that journalists can work without fear, that they are protected and that those who seek to harm or silence them will be held accountable,” said PNP Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil in a message delivered by Police Brigadier General Marlou Roy Alzate.

The initiative, created in partnership with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS), aims to counter the risks media workers have historically faced, including threats, harassment and violence.

Marbil recognized journalism’s critical role in democracy, noting that journalists “help shape national conversations, expose wrongdoing and provide a voice for the people.”

Our goal is clear: no journalist should feel unsafe while doing their job,” Marbil said. “The PNP will ensure that every threat is taken seriously and acted upon swiftly.”

The police force pledged to strengthen coordination with government partners to ensure justice when journalists are targeted, adding that the PNP “will not allow violence and intimidation to silence the press.”  (JEG/PIA-NCR)
