Portasol solar dryers from DOST to boost livelihood activities in Batangas

BATANGAS CITY (PIA) — At least four community-based associations in Batangas are expected to benefit significantly from the portable multipurpose solar drying trays, known as ‘Portasols,’ provided by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)–Calabarzon.

The 20 Portasols, worth ₱730,000, were distributed to several associations, including the Nagkakaisang Samahan ng mga Kababaihan ng Quizumbing (NASAKA) in Calaca City, the Kuyug Sustainable Livelihood Program Association in Calatagan, and the Kilusan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Lawa ng Taal in Mataasnakahoy, which will use the trays for fish drying. The Batangas Cacao Growers Association also received Portasols for drying cacao.

According to DOST-4A, the distribution of Portasols through the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO)-Batangas is part of their efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and improve the economic well-being of local communities through science, technology, and innovation.

DOST-4A highlighted that these multipurpose solar dryers are designed to dry palay and other agricultural products efficiently.

It said that these clean, space-efficient dryers, equipped with stackable grain thermal drying trays, are specifically engineered to reduce the moisture content of large volumes of produce. Each unit can handle up to 150 kilograms of crops such as rice, corn, beans, vegetables, fruits, and fish per drying session.

NASAKA expressed gratitude for the Portasols, emphasizing that the solar drying trays will enhance the drying process of their fish products and ensure product safety and quality.

“These drying trays will significantly contribute to our livelihood, particularly in fish drying. The innovative technology and equipment provided by DOST-4A will not only improve the quality of our products but also speed up the drying process. This will help increase our income and benefit our organization,” said Ma. Victoria Bulaclac, president of NASAKA.

“The DOST’s support is a testament to their compassion and commitment to empowering small organizations like NASAKA. It also inspires our members to continue striving for the development of our community,” she added.

The DOST-4A underscored the advantages of the Portasol system, noting that it provides a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional open-air drying methods, reducing drying time by two-thirds. This technology is crucial in minimizing post-harvest losses and ensuring higher-quality dried produce.

“Given its portability, the Portasol allows beneficiaries to dry more crops in smaller spaces with limited storage facilities. It also prevents pest infestations and promotes proper ventilation between layers, reducing the risk of fungal mold, rot, and mildew,” the DOST-4A explained.

Developed by Filipino inventor-entrepreneur Francisco Pagayon, Portasol is gaining widespread attention across various regions in the country. It is also being distributed by other government agencies, such as the Department of Agrarian Reform, to help farmers boost their agricultural productivity. (FSC, PIA4A/DOST-4A)
