Preps for BARMM 1st parliamentary election in full swing

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — Preparations for the first Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary election are in full throttle, the region’s spokesperson said Tuesday, October 1.

In an interview on the October 1 episode of the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon PTV 4, Cabinet Secretary and spokesperson Mohn Asnin Pendatun said that the preparations are aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure a peaceful, credible, honest election with the highest possible turnout.

BARMM’s first parliamentary election coincides with the May 12, 2025 midterm elections.

“Part of our preparations is the aggressive information and education campaign, focusing on explaining to the electorate the importance of the first parliamentary election,” Pendatun said.

Pressed on the issue of freedom of religion, especially the Christian settlers, Pendatun said, “Our system for the parliamentary election is very inclusive. We have reserved seats for all sectors in the region.”

“We made sure that the non-Moro Indigenous Peoples, Christians, religious groups, youth, and traditional leaders will have representations in the parliament that is based on the Bangsamoro Organic Law,” he added.

He pointed out that the platform of the leaders is one basis for the strength of the representation.

He said that the ultimate basis for the capability of the leader to protect and uphold the rights and freedoms of the constituents is how comprehensive and inclusive the platforms of the candidates are.

“If they failed to safeguard the entitlements of their constituents under the Constitution, this will ultimately affect their performance and prospects for future elections,” he said.

The 2025 BARMM election will be the first for the Bangsamoro Parliament.

Elected officials will assume office on June 30 of the election year, and will succeed the members of the interim Bangsamoro Transition Authority Parliament. (PIA DMD)
