Philippine Red Cross accelerates bloodletting activities under COVID-19 Alert Level 1

MANDALUYONG CITY -- The Philippine Red Cross has resumed its bloodletting activities under COVID-19 alert level 1. Because of the restrictions on mobility and mass gatherings at the height of the pandemic, blood collection was significantly affected. Under COVID-19 alert level 1, all mobility and mass gathering restrictions are lifted, making it possible for the Philippine Red Cross and its partners to organize bloodletting activities.

To donate blood, one must pass the screening. According to Philippine Red Cross Medical Officer Gerald Angelo Valeriano, donors should have 6 to 8 hours of sleep the night before and should have eaten before blood extraction. They should not have COVID-19 symptoms.

Aside from the health benefits of donating blood, donors also have the benefit of being prioritized in case they are the ones in need of blood. They just need to present their request form and blood donor card at the hospital or blood centers.

The Philippine Red Cross now has a total of 100 blood service facilities across the country. From January 1 to May 16, 2022, these blood service facilities have served 74,239 patients, with 131,268 blood units dispensed.

At the onset of the rainy season, it is expected that more people will be prone to diseases, which means the demand for blood will continue.
