The Department of Agriculture Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (DA-PATCO) Siquijor lauded the success of the corn technology demonstration project in Brgy. Timbaon, San Juan, Siquijor.

Together with the Provincial Agriculture Office and the Municipal Agriculture Office, farmer cooperators, the Timbaon Farmer Scientist Association, gathered to discuss the result of the recently concluded crop-cut activity.

The project yielded 2.56 metric tons/hectare (2.56MT/ha), based on the five crop-cut samples taken from the one-hectare demonstration site with hybrid yellow corn as the seed variety.

We are very happy with the result of the project despite many challenges. We, from the agriculture offices, hope that you will adopt these technologies in your own farms)," said Provincial  Agriculturist Emigdio Coritico.

According to Coritico, implementing the project was challenging because of restrictions of group gatherings caused by the rising cases of COVID-19 at the time of the second cropping.

However, he said the project was still pushed through, thanks to the efforts and cooperation of the farmer cooperators, corn program coordinators, and agricultural technicians.

Reggie Bon Ontoy, president of the association, likewise thanked the implementers of the project.

Dako kaayo namong pasalamat sa Department of Agriculture, sa Provincial ug Municipal Agriculture, kay dako kaayo’g natabang ang  maong proyekto (We are very thankful to the Department of Agriculture and Provincial and Municipal Agriculture because this project has really helped us a lot)," expressed Ontoy.

Base sa among experience sa pagpananom, dako ra gyud kaayo ug kalahian ug dinhi nakita gyud namo nga adunaý kalambuan bisan pa ug gibagyo mi (Based on our previous planting experience, it was very different. Through this project, we have seen the adoption of these technologies yielded a positive result),” he added.

Based on the cost and return analysis, the farmer association earned a gross income of P64,000 from corn grains and P69,712 from corn grits with an overall production cost of P52,920. (PR)
