Pro-Marcos Filipinos up further; pro-Duterte decline—OCTA survey

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — Adult Filipinos who identify themselves as pro-Marcos further increased in the third quarter of 2024 while those who identify themselves as pro-Duterte decreased, according to results of the latest Tugon ng Masa (TNM) survey by OCTA Research.

The survey results released Monday, Oct. 14, showed that 38 percent of adult Filipinos identified themselves as pro-Marcos, demonstrating a two percent increase from the second quarter survey conducted in March. The adult Filipinos identifying themselves as pro-Duterte were at 15 percent, or 1 percent lower from the previous survey.

The research group said that while the findings indicate a nominal change at the national level for the third quarter, analyzing the data for the last three quarters of 2024 suggested a “continuing upward trend” since the first quarter to those who prefer to identify themselves as supportive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and his administration, and a “continuing downward trend” to those supportive of Duterte family and their political alliance.

During an interview over Radyo Pilipinas on Oct. 14, OCTA Research Group Fellow, Prof. Ranjit Rye, said, “38 percent ng ating mga kababayan na tinanong namin, nagsabing they support the Marcos administration.”

(38 percent of our fellow Filipinos that we asked said they support the Marcos administration.)

He added, “First quarter ay 31 percent, second quarter ay naging 36 percent, ngayong third quarter ay 38 percent. Huwag nating tingnan per quarter, yung kabuuan ang tingnan natin. So, nakikita natin na pataas nang pataas yung preference.”

(First quarter, it was 31 percent; second quarter, it became 36 percent; and in this third quarter, it’s 38 percent. Let us not look at it per quarter, but as a whole. So, we see that the preference has been continuing in its upward trend.)

(Those who identify themselves as pro-Duterte, the 20 percent in the first quarter, now it’s only 15 percent in the third quarter. The trend, although it’s a small decrease, from 16 in the second quarter to 15 percent in the third quarter, in the class E or the poorest among the people, the pro-Duterte fell by 11 percent.)

Rye noted that the number of Filipinos who identify themselves as pro-Marcos increased even amid the many challenges that faced the country.

(It’s important to note that despite the major challenges inherited by this administration—the challenges of global recovery, global instabilities, economic and political around the world, especially on the issues of rice and food security—we see the upward trend. It means that there are programs being implemented by the president. Moreover, his cabinet, his overall administration, in the first, second, and third quarters, the support for him has been increasing.)

Meanwhile, OCTA said 26 percent of adult Filipinos consider themselves independent or individuals who do not identify themselves as pro-Marcos, pro-Duterte, or the opposition, a five percent decrease from the previous TNM survey conducted in the second quarter of 2024.

Also, around 7 percent of adult Filipinos support the opposition—up by 2 percent from the previous survey—while 14 percent were ambivalent about their political references.

The survey also showed the majority, or 43 percent, of pro-Marcos Filipinos were in Balanced Luzon, with 42 percent in the National Capital Region (NCR), 37 percent in the Visayas, and 25 percent in Mindanao. They were supported by Class E (40 percent) and Class ABCD (38 percent).

The survey, according to OCTA, was conducted through face-to-face interviews from August 28 to September 2, including 1,200 male and female respondents aged 18 and above.

It had a ±3 percent margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level and a ±6 percent regional margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level. (PIA DMD)
