ILOILO CITY (PIA) — In commemoration of the National Children’s Month and as a means to bring the spirit of Christmas among communities, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 6 successfully conducted five “Project Angel Tree” activities recently, with three held in Iloilo City and one each held in Tigbauan and Concepcion towns in Iloilo.
These events were made possible through DOLE’s partnership with the Iloilo City Council Against Child Labor, PESO-Iloilo City, Bidlisiw Foundation Inc.- Philippines, PESO-Tigbauan, and PESO-Concepcion.
A total of 254 children and their families received various forms of assistance.
“This is part of DOLE Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program, which aims to prevent, reduce, and eventually eliminate child labor in the Philippines through direct intervention or referrals to appropriate agencies and organizations,” emphasized DOLE 6 Regional Director lawyer Sixto Rodriguez Jr.
The events featured an advocacy campaign against child labor, gift-giving to children, turnover of livelihood checks, and releasing of livelihood items to parents of child laborers.
It also included learning sessions conducted by the Iloilo Field Office, PDA-Iloilo Chapter, MORE Electric Power Corporation, MSWDO of Tigbauan, Iloilo, MHO of Tigbauan, Iloilo and free haircut services provided by the Philippine Army, Office of the LGBTQ Affairs-Iloilo City, and Tigbaw Pride.
Moreover, a medical drive was conducted through the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development, Iloilo City Health Office, and the Municipal Health Office of Tigbauan, Iloilo, as well as a dental drive by the Philippine Dental Association-Iloilo Chapter, among other activities.
