‘Project Angel Tree’ offers hope, assistance to Tibiao’s child workers

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — Over a hundred families with children considered child laborers received much-needed support from various government agencies during a heartwarming “Project Angel Tree” event held recently at the town’s gymnasium.

The event, organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), aimed to provide families with comprehensive assistance, including medical consultations with free medicines, free haircuts, food packs, school supplies, pre-loved clothing, and other gifts.

Philippine Army Lieutenant Colonel Arturo Balgos, Jr., a vocal advocate for child protection programs, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating child labor. He highlighted the vulnerability of children from impoverished families to recruitment by communist terrorist groups, a threat that jeopardizes their safety, education, and future prospects.

“We must work together to protect our children and ensure they have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” Balgos stressed, urging parents to guide their children towards a brighter future. He also encouraged children to follow their parents’ guidance and strive to become responsible individuals.

The Philippine Army played a crucial role in the event, bringing with them doctors who conducted free consultations in partnership with the Rural Health Unit of Tibiao. Some army officers even donned the role of barbers, providing free haircuts for the children.

The event, a testament to the collaborative efforts of government agencies and the community, offered hope and support to families struggling with child labor. It served as a reminder that the well-being of children is paramount, and that collective action is essential to safeguarding their future.

DOLE Senior Labor and Employment Officer Donnabelle Baldonado during the activity shared the initiatives and programs of DOLE to prevent child labor.

Aside from Project Angel Tree, DOLE also provided livelihood assistance for families with children who are considered child laborers while others are employed through Tulong Pangkabuhayan Para sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers.

Philippine Information Agency Antique Information Center also supported the activity with Hinun-anon or discussion on the salient provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Provincial Government of Antique and the Municipal Government of Tibiao are also actively supporting the event with their respective Public Employment Services Office (PESO) which organized the event with the provision of snacks for the kids.
The Philippine National Police – Tibiao Police Station also supported the event with the presence of Police Major Christopher N. Candelario who reminded children of their responsibilities to their parents and their families.

Vice Mayor Jimmy Abarientos of Tibiao lauded this initiative as a way of helping the kids avail of services from various stakeholders.

He also urged children to heed the guidance of their parents, finish their studies, and achieve their dreams. (AGP/PIA Antique)
