PSA-X seeks support for key statistical activities in NorMin

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-X, through the Regional Statistics Committee (RSC)-X, is calling for support from local stakeholders for the successful conduct of essential statistical activities in Northern Mindanao throughout 2025.

In the RSC-X quarterly meeting held on January 17, 2025, the PSA-X outlined its plans for this year, which include eight establishment-based surveys and nine household-based surveys designed to provide crucial data for evidence-based decision-making in regional development programs and policies.

“These statistical events are vital for us as we aim to be more evidence-based in our decision-making, particularly in programs, projects, and policies,” said Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, Chairperson of the RSC-X and Regional Director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-X.

Among the surveys requiring regional support is the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), a comprehensive national survey to collect data on key health indicators such as fertility, family planning, HIV/AIDS, child health, and nutrition. The NDHS, conducted every three years, will start its enumeration period on March 17, 2025, and conclude on May 3, 2025. This survey provides invaluable information for policy-makers in the health and family planning sectors.

PSA-X is also currently conducting the 2024 Census of Population and the Community-Based Monitoring System (POPCEN-CBMS). As of December 31, 2024, out of the 7,444 enumeration areas in the region, 7,420 have been completed, representing an overall completion rate of 99.68 percent.

“Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Iligan City, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental have completed their data collection while Cagayan de Oro City has completed 1,090 out of 1,114 enumeration areas and this represents 97.85 percent,” said PSA-X Regional Director Janith Aves.

Aves however said that as of January 2025, Cagayan de Oro City is at 98.74 percent completion, with just a few areas still being enumerated, namely, Bugo, Carmen, Lumbia, Kauswagan, Tablon, and Bulua.

“To ensure full coverage, all provinces and highly urbanized cities are actively conducting their saturation drive activities,” Aves added.

Other Key Statistical Activities

In addition to the NDHS and POPCEN-CBMS, PSA as the statistical arm of the government, is scheduled to conduct a series of essential surveys throughout the year. These include the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), which gathers data on the performance of the manufacturing sector, focusing on employment, compensation, production, and sales; the Producer Price Survey (PPS), which collects monthly data on producer prices for selected products within the Producer Price Index (PPI) market basket; and the Quarterly Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (QSPBI), which generates data on key industries across the economy (excluding agriculture, forestry, and fishing) and is crucial for the compilation of national accounts.

Other surveys include the Rice and Corn Stocks Survey (Household and Commercial), which monitors stock levels of staple foods to ensure food security and price stability; the Livestock and Poultry Survey (Backyard and Commercial), which gathers data on the supply and disposition of livestock and poultry commodities; and the Crops Production Survey (CrPS), which focuses on generating data for crops other than palay and corn. The Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS), on the other hand, will provide data on the production, area, yield, and other related factors for these staple crops.

PSA-X will also conduct the Quarterly Fisheries Surveys (QFS) to collect data on the production and value of fisheries across various sectors, as well as the Commodity Flow Survey (CFS), which will gather quarterly information on the movement of commodities between provinces, contributing to the understanding of trade dynamics in agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.

Moreover, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will track changes in the average prices of goods and services purchased, while the Quarterly Consumer Expectation Survey (CES) will provide insights into households’ financial situations and their outlook on the economy. Finally, the Labor Force Survey (LFS) will provide critical data on labor market conditions through monthly and quarterly surveys.

PSA-X urges local government units, businesses, community leaders, and other Northern Mindanao stakeholders to fully support these statistical initiatives.

Participating in these surveys helps build a more accurate and comprehensive dataset that benefits the entire region. (APB/PIA-10)
