Public sector officers across Asia learn new digital communication strategies

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Asian Productivity Organization (APO), in coordination with the China Productivity Center (CPC), conducted a Workshop on Digital Communications Strategy for the Public Sector from June 26 to 28, 2024, through virtual sessions.

The workshop aimed to teach about digital communication strategies for the public sector to better engage citizens and effectively leverage new tools and techniques for digital outreach.

Participants included government officials, managers, and staff of public sector organizations that are involved in digital communications and community/citizen outreach from some APO member countries. 

Representatives from the Philippines included officers from the Philippine Information Agency, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the National Youth Commission, and DOST-Mimaropa.

Lectures included: (1) Introducing a New Wave of Marketing and Communications Strategies, which introduced marketing in general and its evolution from traditional to the new digital wave; (2) Social Media and the Attention Economy, which helped participants appreciate the fundamentals principles of social media and how the attention economy works; (3) Framework and Approach for Digital Communications Strategies which dove deeper into designing a communication strategy that focuses on costumer/citizen relevance and product/service differentiation; (4) AI for Digital Communication Creation where participants learned about using generative AI tools; (5) Innovative Approaches to Communications and Collaborations between Citizens and Governments; and (6) Collaborative Policy Development Engaging Stakeholders for Impact, which explored real cases and strategies for engaging stakeholders throughout the policy design process, ensuring that policies reflect diverse perspectives.  

Towards the end, participants were divided into groups, and they did a “persona” workshop. The activity aimed to inspire all participants to build a foundation for their digital communication strategies.

After the workshop, participants are expected to help promote or advocate productivity, keep the APO secretariat informed of productivity improvement efforts, and join the APO alumni or grantee network.

APO is a non-political, non-profit, and non-discriminatory organization, established on May 11, 1961, as a regional, inter-governmental organization that promotes productivity among its member economies, focusing on the industry, services, and agriculture sectors through partnerships with National Productivity Organizations and other international organizations.

The current membership is 21 economies, comprising Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Republic of China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkiye, and Vietnam.
