PUV modernization consolidation rate in Cagayan Valley nears 100%

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – – The consolidation for the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program in the Cagayan Region has reached almost 100 percent, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) here revealed.

Regional Director Richard Dayag said the consolidation rate for Public Utility Jeepneys is now at 99.95 percent or equivalent to 2,601 units, while those for Public Utility Vans is now at 99.79 percent or 1,426 units.

Dayag said the very high acceptance rate of drivers and operators on the PUV modernization program is attributed to the intensified campaign and support initiatives of the different government agencies including the Office of the Transportation Cooperatives and the Cooperative Development Authority.

As the next step of the program, Dayag said the submission of the Local Public Route Plan from the Local Government Units is now at 66.33 percent or 65 plans.

“The remaining LGUs are already crafting their respective route plans, with 10 memorandum circulars, notices of compliance, or special notice of compliance issued by the LTFRB in favor of various LGUs,” said Dayag

Through the Department of Transportation, Dayag also said they were able to deploy 2,163 modern PUJs at 80 taxis in the region.

“This is part of our thrust to ensure safe and environment-friendly public utility vehicles in the region,” he said.

In compliance with the Electric Vehicles Industry Development Act, he also said there were already 15 electric jeepneys with public convenience certificates plying in the region to help eliminate the importation of fuel and help operators reduce their expenses.

“With these positive developments, we are confident that full modernization of public transportation in the region will double in the near future,” Dayag added. (OTB/MFJ/PIA Region 2)
