QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Quezon City government announced over the weekend that it is significantly expanding its scholarship program to provide greater educational opportunities for students in the city.
Through Ordinance No. SP-3283, the city’s scholarship offerings will now include new subcategories for academics, specialized tracks, athletics and the arts, and youth leadership, in addition to the existing senior high school scholarship.
“We are seeking to expand this program that will have a big impact on our youth,” said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte. “Providing more funds to our scholarship program is a necessary and sound investment for the city’s future.”
The stipend for senior high school scholars will increase from 4,000 pesos (approximately $70 USD) to 10,000 pesos (approximately $175 USD) annually. At the tertiary level, the stipend for academic, athletic, and arts scholarships, as well as youth leader/scholar awards, will rise from 4,000 pesos to 25,000 pesos (approximately $440 USD) per year. Continuing education and vocational course scholars will also see their stipends increase from 6,000 pesos to 10,000 pesos.
The new QC Excel Scholarship for tertiary students aims to cultivate a pool of young leaders and a workforce to support local government initiatives. These scholars are selected based on academic excellence, as well as demonstrated leadership and active involvement in volunteer work and impactful social activities.
Mayor Belmonte urged all aspiring scholars to secure their QCitizen ID, as it is the primary requirement to access the city’s expanded scholarship program. The online application process for new scholars will begin on August 5, 2024.
“This will benefit thousands of QCitizens who want to continue their studies or go back to school,” the mayor said. “Expanding our scholarship offerings is a crucial investment in the future of our youth and our city.” (AVS/PIA-NCR)
